Weight Loss Surgery Saves Lives

Two recent, groundbreaking studies conducted in Utah (Adams et al, 2007) and Sweden (Sjöström et al, 2007) present compelling evidence that bariatric surgery reduces mortality rates, particularly deaths caused by diabetes, cancer and heart disease. Both studies showed that, over an average period of seven years, gastric bypass surgery patients enjoyed a 30-40% lower risk of death than people with similar BMIs who did not undergo weight loss surgery. Adams' study further demonstrated that post-bariatric patients were 92% less likely to die of diabetes, 60% less likely to die of cancer, and 56% less likely to die of coronary artery disease. The life-preserving benefits of post-bariatric weight loss were similar for men and women.

These statistics clearly support what bariatric surgeons and weight loss surgery patients have long known: weight loss surgery can save lives. The studies' findings are so striking, in fact, that many doctors expect the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to adjust its guidelines and encourage bariatric surgery for obese people with lower BMIs. (As of 1991, the NIH guidelines have recommended surgical intervention for patients with a BMI of more than 40 or of more than 35 with accompanying obesity-related disease.)

The results of weight loss surgery today should be even more dramatic than the numbers stated above, now that safer laparoscopic techniques have largely replaced open surgery. Mortality rates should also drop for bariatric surgery patients who choose physicians who have performed more than 50-100 weight loss surgeries.
