About LA Bariatric Center in Los Angeles

If you’ve tried everything to combat obesity but nothing seems to work in the long term, bariatric surgery might be for you. LA Bariatrics is a Los Angeles bariatric center specializing in surgical weight loss solutions, with a proven and extensive track record of safety and success.

Our treatment specialty is laparoscopic surgery, which is minimally invasive. That means a quicker recovery and lower risk of certain complications compared to traditional “open” surgery.

Our Los Angeles staff members and doctors consult with each patient to determine whether surgery is right for the individual, which operation is best suited to his or her needs, and what personalized post-surgery plan the patient should follow for the best results. We devise healthy diet and exercise plans for each individual patient, because although all our clients share the drive to improve their health, no two people are alike. We are committed to our patients’ long-term health, so we provide long-term follow-up care. This is essential to weight loss surgery success and to our patients' sustained health and well-being.

Surgical Weight Loss Options

LA Bariatrics provides several types of weight loss surgery at our Los Angeles weight loss surgery center. These include:

  • Adjustable laparoscopic gastric banding (the “LAP-BAND”). This operation is the most popular bariatric procedure in Los Angeles and elsewhere. The physician does not surgically modify the gastrointestinal tract itself; rather, he places a band around the upper portion of the stomach, creating a small pouch that does not hold much food. The LAP-BAND is “inflatable” with saline, which is injected through a small port beneath the skin of the abdomen. This operation may have shorter recovery time and more manageable side-effects than some other operations; it is also most easily reversible in the case of emergency. (Patients should think of it as permanent, however.)

  • Gastric bypass, is a well established bariatric surgery procedure that has been performed for decades worldwide.  Many Los Angeles patients undergo gastric bypass because it is a proven technique with successful long term weight loss results.  This effective procedure is both “malabsorptive,” meaning it keeps the body from absorbing all the calories it takes in, and “restrictive,” meaning it keeps you from eating large portions. In gastric bypass surgery, the surgeon sections off the stomach, creating a small “pouch” to hold food, and then re-routes the intestines so food travels a shorter distance through the digestive tract. The stomach cannot hold much food, and when it digests food, the body doesn’t have the opportunity to absorb all the calories before elimination.

  • Sleeve gastrectomy (“gastric sleeve”), in which the surgeon removes a portion of the stomach. The stomach is reduced to a small tube, or “sleeve,” which holds a small percentage of the food that the entire stomach could accommodate.  Today it is performed as a stand-alone procedure with certain unique advantages over both gastric bypass and LAP-BAND.  Recently gastric sleeve has been recognized as a covered bariatric procedure by several major insurance companies.

  • Other procedures, including gastric plication (in which the stomach is folded over onto itself to create a “sleeve”) and revisional procedures for patients whose operations are less successful over time than desired.

Los Angeles Center of Excellence

How do you know you’ve selected an excellent center for medical weight loss surgery? The Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence program [LINK TO ASMBS SITE?] has been created to distinguish the facilities that give the best care and have the most experience — in other words, only the best weight loss programs get this honor. In fact, the Center of Excellence distinction is so important that some insurance companies will cover bariatric surgery only from recognized Centers of Excellence.

To become a Center of Excellence, a center and all its physicians must undergo rigorous screening. Each center and each surgeon must have performed a minimum number of surgeries to qualify, ensuring only the most experienced facilities and doctors make the grade. Each physician and facility must also perform a minimum number of surgeries annually to retain the qualification.

LA Bariatrics is proud to qualify as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. We happily serve Los Angeles residents with the highest standard for quality, and our patients experience positive results.
