REALIZE Band is a safe and effective surgical weight loss solution that limits the amount of food you can consume without cutting or stapling the stomach. This procedure, performed laparoscopically, places an adjustable gastric band around the upper part of the stomach to divide it in two and restrict food intake. As the patient loses weight, the band is adjusted to ensure appropriate and comfortable weight loss for each individual case.
The REALIZE Band has been proven effective, with most patients losing an average of 40 percent of their excess body fat in the first year after surgery. These results can be easily maintained through a healthy, balanced diet and a regular exercise routine.
Compared to other bariatric surgeries, the REALIZE Band has the following advantages:
The REALIZE Band is ideal for patients with a body mass index (BMI) of at least 40, which usually equates to about 100 pounds overweight. Patients must also be at least 18 years old. Some patients who do not meet these requirements may still be eligible for the REALIZE Band procedure. Any patient hoping to undergo any kind of bariatric surgery must be fully committed to making the life changes necessary to achieve and maintain results.
Before surgery, it is important for patients to quit smoking for at least 30 days, as smoking can increase the risk of complications from surgery. During surgery, a small incision is made near the belly button and the abdomen is filled with carbon dioxide to create more space. A camera is inserted through the incision, and a few additional incisions are then made to place the band and lock it in place around the stomach. The new stomach will only be able to hold about four ounces (or ½ cup) of food.
While the REALIZE Band procedure is considered safe, there are certain risks and complications associated with any kind of gastric banding surgery. Some of these risks may include infection, implant migration, leakage, GERD, inflammation and more. Most patients experience regurgitation, nausea, constipation and diarrhea for some time after surgery. Your doctor will discuss these risks with you before your procedure.
