Pouch Revision Surgery

Incisionless Restorative Obesity Surgery

We are very pleased to announce that L.A. Bariatric Center is now offering a new, less invasive surgical option to treat weight regain in post-Roux-en-Y gastric bypass patients. A revolutionary surgical approach, allowing for incisionless surgery, is the next step in the evolution of minimally invasive surgery. Advances in technology now facilitate access to internal organs via natural orifices, such as the mouth.

Pouch Revision Surgery | Incisionless Restorative Obesity Surgery | StomaphyX Device | Los Angeles | Orange County | Inland Empire

Most gastric bypass patients obtain excellent weight loss after surgery. Some patients however, experience weight regain years after their original bypass surgery. This weight regain may be caused by a gradual enlargement of the stomach pouch or stoma (the connection between the stomach pouch and small intestine). We recognize this is a source of frustration and health concern and it has motivated us to pursue new options and potential solutions for our patients. Revision of the gastric pouch using a new incisionless technique is one of those options. The ROSE procedure and StomaphyX™ device are examples of this incisionless surgery.

The procedure is performed using a small flexible endoscope and a new EndoSurgical Operating System, (EOS). The scope and instruments are inserted through the mouth into the stomach pouch, the same way a standard endoscope is inserted. Tissue anchors are used to create multiple, circumferential tissue folds around the stoma to reduce the diameter, typically to about 10mm. The same technique is used to place anchors in the stomach pouch to reduce its volume capacity. After the procedure the patient will enter the institution's standard bariatric surgery follow-up program.

By eliminating skin incisions, this new procedure is expected to provide important advantages to patients, including, reduced risk of infection, less post-operative pain, faster recovery time, and no abdominal scars.
